Description

This qualification is intended to meet the needs of people employed in Care Homes or Domiciliary Care Agencies and who administer medication to service users. It aims to provide Care Workers with the knowledge to safely handle medication by providing fundamental background knowledge on the Laws and Legislation that apply to handling medicines, the roles and responsibilities of all personnel involved, the types and classifications of medication prescribed and best practices for safe administration of medicines. The content of this course is solely aimed at Care Workers and includes information relevant to the level of competence that their role would require.

Who is the qualification aimed at?
This qualification is aimed at either Care Workers who are competent in administering medication but require some up-to-date training or Care Workers who are new to the industry and require the background knowledge to be able to safely and effectively handle medication.
The course can be delivered to Care Home Workers and Domiciliary Care Workers using Units 1 to 4.

Course Structure
The course has four units, which are completed in one six-hour training session led by an experienced facilitator. In addition to this the student will be required to complete some pre-course reading and research. The pre-course work will take approximately 2 hours to complete and is provided for them by TOMMSpharmacy. Provided also on the day is a Workbook which contains exercises and reference material for the student to take away.

Unit 1 Current legislation & guidance for medicines handling for Care Workers
Unit 2 Roles, responsibilities and boundaries of the care worker and other professionals involved with medicines
Unit 3 Types of medicines and routes of administration
Unit 4 Safe practices in the administration of medication for Care Workers.

Assessment
At the end of each unit the student must successfully complete an assessment paper consisting of Multiple Choice Questions and Short Answer questions, to demonstrate knowledge gained. This is a ‘closed book’ assessment. There are certain questions, containing essential knowledge that must be answered correctly, in order to pass this course. The student is only allowed to answer one of these questions incorrectly, before they will automatically fail the course. These questions can be identified in the assessment papers as they are coloured in red ink. There are four assessment papers resulting in a total of 61 marks available. The student must achieve the 26 marks required by the red questions and at least another 21 marks in addition, to achieve a total of 47 marks (78%) across all four papers to achieve the required standard and receive the certificate.

The student may attempt the assessment papers twice, by means of a 2 hour Re-sit Session, before having to attend another course for which the student will be given extra support by the tutor and some suggested extra reading depending on the areas the student is having difficulties with.

The course can be delivered in one six hour session or two three and a half hour sessions.
