New Choices - New Shoots
Bradford Provider List
New Shoots is a horticultural service that runs from an allotment in partnership with Keighley Allotment Association.
There are various plots on site used by local residents in the heart of a busy community. The group at New Shoots tends to be smaller but can accommodate more people. The site is quite large and so the team are able to vary what they grow.
In addition to working on the allotment, we often visit other horticultural locations and activities, and in the colder months some people choose to attend other services.
Activities :
- With an established vegetable garden, grow plants, top fruit and soft fruits. For those with less mobility or energy, we do tabletop gardening (potting up etc.,) and for those more physically able, they may work on more vigorous gardening tasks for example ‘digging beds’, ‘planting out’ etc. Drawing on the abilities and skills of each individual, the people who attend operate very much as a team.
- Some of the fruit and vegetables are used within both New Shoots and other services as part of healthy eating and life skills groups.
- The service has held stalls to sell produce in local markets and has had open days to sell produce. The group visits other New Choices services within the area to support with any other projects and general maintenance of garden areas.
- Participants can develop workplace skills in many aspects of allotment gardening.
- The service has previously developed rewarding links with Keighley College, the local Asda, The Princes Trust.
- The group is working towards developing a sensory garden incorporating forestry, and wildlife spotting.
- New Shoots has a walking group that meets each Thursday. Walks are usually local and include parks and visitor attractions.
- The group hold a weekly quiz which encourages interaction and communication, this helps build positive relationships and confidence.
If you love being outdoors, New Shoots could be just for you! Get in touch to find out more.
