Alrsiraj (Refugee Group)
The group, supported by Girlington Community Centre, and comprising of refugee individuals / families, has been meeting since the covid period, and provides a place for:
social interaction for individuals / families who may otherwise feel isolated developing skills and knowledge, including English and driving theory test, Arabic classes for children
discussions on health matters, including how to access mental health services. Individuals / families can be referred internally to Girlington Community Centre for health and wellbeing sessions and to the be-friending team.
The group are looking to become self-funding so that they can continue working towards enabling their participants to integrate across the Bradford district. They would like to develop the existing range of activities through:
Groups offering peer, and one-to-one support which will enable participants to share their experiences. We recognise that the stresses of not being able to see family members, or anxiety about loved ones left behind can have a significant impact on the mental wellbeing of this particular group of people.
Singing, gardening and health cooking sessions are planned – which can help with maintaining positive mental health.
Inviting health professional to come and talk to the discussion group(s) about health-related topics, including mental health. This will help to remove the stigma around talking about mental health issues.
Continued signposting / internal referrals to enable people to access the care they need.
Physical sports activities for families – connecting with other projects and services that are available to help maintain good health and wellbeing.
Outings to explore the wider area – the group do not get the opportunity, nor do they have the finances to explore the locality. Being able to provide these on a group basis will enable participants to explore further afield in the safety of a known peer group.
