Tai-Chi Style Exercise for Later Life
Join us for relaxing and enjoyable exercise routines adapted from Tai Chi for the needs of older people. Participation in the movements of tai-chi is generally beneficial for health and wellbeing. The gentle nature of this exercise, which works within the body's natural alignment, is particularly helpful for people living with dementia, people living with low mood or low confidence or with conditions such as arthritis that limit movement. It is also helpful for pain management. Regular exercise reduces the risk for dementia and has been shown to slow the progression of dementia symptoms in some cases. Tai Chi can also reduce stress and strengthen the bond between the caregiver and the person with dementia, creating a shared activity that promotes positive interactions. People with dementia are especially welcome but they do need to attend with their caregiver or another friend/supporter. The class includes a refreshment break when there is time to talk to others and make new friends.
